Okay kats and kiddies, what's been up with the Techie? Where's he been for so long?

Well.. here's the scoop. @Home played hell with my net connection, and I've been 'net-less for a while. My local cable company are furkin' morons, and their tech support hours suck, so it took forever to get it worked out. I'd been driving my cop car for a few months because my van started leaking oil. Turns out it was a leaking front crank seal. So between cable and my van, I spent around $500 of my tax refund just getting back to "status quo."

However, I finally picked up a PS2 (Yay me!) and although I'm too poor to afford many games, I found Silent HIll 2 used for $20 at my local Hollywood Video and am amusing myself with that.

Katherine came and visited from Ottawa, and it was a total disaster. Even before she came to visit, she'd gotten all clingy and codependent and her personality just started to rub me the wrong way. But I thought I'd see if it was just the long distance, or her, and well, the week we spent together was hell. She wouldn't leave me alone, and all I could think about was how soon I could get rid of her. I know that sounds like a mean thing to say, but it's the truth. Plus I realized I was interested in other people, and that other people were interested in me.

So right now I'm seeing a friend of mine from the LARP. I never thought it would happen, because all the girls at LARP that I liked were taken. Never figured that the one I wanted would break up with her b/f and go out with me because she'd been attracted to me before they'd ever dated. Too bad the melodrama associated with dating in social circles sucks.

Right now, my social hobbies are annoying the hell out of me. The SCA group I'm in has divided itself, and is in the process of flushing itself down the toilet because the big and powerful household that's the main portion of the group has an ego problem, and the LARP I'm in seems to have similar problems, except for the fact that none of them seem to understand anything legal or business-like.

*le sigh*

Ironically, though, the rest of my life is going pretty good.. I've got my cable modem back, my van back, my house is clean, I've got a local girlfriend who's not a psycho (there's a first for me) and my close friends are like family. If I could just extricate myself from the melodrama from the idiots in my life, all would be perfect!

Oh well. :)

I'm shocked to see an entry from you! I was just thinking about you the other day, and checked your LJ profile to see if you'd at least been around. I figured you'd given up on this site all together, by now. ;)

Good to hear you're still around and doing well, despite the little things that life throws at people.

Take care. :)

Not so fast..

Pffbbbt... You can't get rid of me that easily. ;)

Things just took a lot of time to get situated. I've had lots of "so-called" friendships go to hell, my job which I'm still getting used to, paying bills, and so on. (My job, which has different levels of difficulty, likes to switch me around constantly until they can ultimately figure out where I need to be.)

Mostly, it was just a matter of before Feb. 18th, I had @Home. But @Home were morons. I started with a static IP, and at some point they decided to switch to DHCP. Their tech support couldn't help me, and for some reason, their DHCP server hated my guts, 'cos I could never get past their gateway. The only way I could get out at all was by putting in my old Static IP settings and such, and then, depending on it's mood, I could have my connection for a few days, or 10 minutes and then all of a sudden it would stop. (I suspect maybe because of DHCP, the servers were leasing out my 'Static' IP to other people, which killed my end.)

On top of that, at some point, @Home and/or Insight stopped Credit Card billing and switched to a Billing Statement. In other words, they were just going to tack the Internet Charges onto your TV bill. But wait, what about us that don't have Cable TV, but just the internet service? Oops. No bill. I had over $200 in back fees when Insight switched from @Home to ATT backbone Feb. 18th. Because of all of that, 1) They never migrated my account from @Home to Insight, and 2) They wouldn't turn me back on until I paid anyways.

Now, Rockford's insight office has hours of 9-5, and I work 8-4:30 and have no phone access during the day. Holy Time Crisis, Batman! So from Feb. 18th to March 23rd, I had no internet service other than borrowing my father's pc or using *shudder* AOL dialup. March 28th, when @home went bye-bye for good, any email that went to game-cat95@home.com went into that eternal abyss of dev/null, or wherever the electrons go when we're done with them. Obviously, being stuck with AOL and not having a "real" email client (no filters, mailing lists getting eaten whole) or reliable service, my PC pretty much sat, unused and unloved and unconnected during that time. I began to go through withdrawl.

Obviously, I needed to have real service. Not to mention that I was still pissed about the whole thing. Other little details that popped up were originally being billed for 3 months that my account had been cancelled for, having to pay over $200 for service at @home that had been crappy and unreliable at best, and then when all was said and done, the day I finally got a hold of the technician and got service turned back on, I got a letter in the mail stating that I had been audited by Insight and that I was receiving Cable *TV* and wasn't a subscriber and wasn't paying for it, and oh, by the way, did I know that stealing cable TV was a crime punishable by a $10,000 fine? (I've never had Cable TV at my house, and I'm a legit Cable modem subscriber. Whee.)

Now, frankly, I hate @home and I hate Insight more. But alas, even though DSL is apparently available somewhere in my town, Neither my parents nor myself seem to live close enough to the switching station, or some other such garbage, that according to SBC Ameritech, deems that we cannot get DSL at our homes. So unfortunately, Cable is my only option of broadband. Ahh the evils of monopoly. So all this does is steel my resolve that damnit, I *will* have real internet again, and I *will* get my broadband. So naturally, here I am, full of piss and vinegar from the fight.

But don't give up the ghost on me yet. Besides, Nevy, you're my contact in MN; I can't let you disappear.. (I heard recently that my favorite MN authors were making an appearance at Uncle Hugo's to honor the recent fallen, and I cried in agony that I couldn't make the drive.)
