sabrinageek: (hacker)
Okay, I didn't get to make the longer post I wanted to make earlier about all the stuff that's been going on in my life lately. I'll try and make that up sometime this week. However, I have to share the good news:

Right around the new year, I was reading the latest issue of Blacklisted!411, which is a hacking magazine in similar fashion to 2600. I was browsing the letters section where 2-3 people mentioned having grown up with/still using Commodore & Amiga computers, and how they want more information, articles, etc. The editor mentioned that they only had one guy at the moment who was contributing Amiga information, but that they'd love to have more.

So of course, that prompted me to write them a letter in response about the current state of the Commodore/Amiga scene, plus drop a few choice links, plug the user groups, etc.

Within a day, I got a response saying that they would love to have more articles if I would care to write, and that my letter would be published in the next issue. Okay, cool beans!

Well, I'd always wanted to write for 2600 or Blacklisted, and this prompted me to get off my ass and start writing about some of the stuff I know. I took photos, and whipped up a fairly professional 1800 word article or so in about 10 days and sent it off.

Today, on their forums, they announced the new issue, along with the table of contents for the that issue --
My article made it in and I'm being published!

Granted, it's not like writing a book or anything, but I can now say I've
actually had something published.

And of course, for those of you that know me, it would probably make sense
in that it's in "Blacklisted! 411." What, TechWolf wrote a technical piece
for a hacker mag? But that's so unlike him!

Anyways, my article "Inexpensive Ethernet for 8-bit PCs" will be in the Winter
issue (on sale 2/10) of Blacklisted! 411.

I haven't heard from the editor yet, to find out if I'm getting the usual subscription
for getting an article published, or if I'm getting paid, or what, heck, I didn't even
get a response that they were using my article, so finding out it made it in is a surprise.

But I don't care. I've got a lot of online friends (Yes, that's you B'townies out there!) who are
published authors with books and comics and screenplays and all kinds of stuff, and well, I have to
admit that at times, I didn't feel like I was special because I didn't do anything cool, I was just that guy who knows how to fix stuff. Yes, I know it's irrational. But hey, now I'm having an article published in a magazine that's distributed in the US and abroad with a 200k circulation. I can dig that.

Looks like I'll have to keep writing.
